Domestic Violence Project
Forty welcome tote bags, especially
packed for women and children were delivered on September 4 to
Womansplace, the domestic violence shelter in McKeesport. Some of the
comfort items were a toothbrush and toothpaste and deodorant, a journal,
a bath puff and body wash. A new towel and washcloth, lotion and lip
balm - simple things we all take for granted.
The children’s tote bag included
educational material and activity books, pencils, crayons, a bath toy,
towels, soap, shampoo and dental hygiene items. And some additional
things all residents can enjoy like DVD’s, note cards, hair dryers,
underwear, sheet sets, blankets and towels.
The counselors were delighted with the delivery and really happy to have
a ready packed tote bag to hand a woman and child in need. |

Stephen Foster Christmas Families

Our Christmas
family project surpassed anything we have done in the past; we collected
$625.00 this year.
We were able to buy clothing, toys and gift certificates for 5
children, supply one very needy family with a gift card to Wal-Mart
provided by Project Star..
We also helped 2 young men, (out of there home because of abuse) 1 is 18
working 2 jobs to keep his younger brother and himself together. They
were provided with most of their rent for a month & some gift
certificates for food.
Barb and I were able to see the reactions of those receiving the gifts
for these children, I wish you could have too.
Some of us have
been involved in providing families with Christmas gifts since the late
70's and no one organization or person can believe what we do year after
year for our Christmas families.
Thank you all so much.
Mary

ATTENTION BUSINESS TRAVELERS & VACATIONERS……./MCj02909510000[1].gif)
…………….we
need your HELP!
Our supply of sample size
soap, shampoo, and lotion is critically low. When you travel (even
overnight!), please save the complimentary items provided by the
hotels! You can even ask your friends and family to save them for
you too. The Verizon Garage in Monroeville has generously provided
space for our packing operation. You can now mail the toiletries
intra-company to:
Gerry McLaughlin
c/o Pioneers
508 Old Frankstown Rd
Monroeville, PA
These items are used to
pack hygiene kits for the homeless folks and sent to Operation
Save-A-Life, Operation Safety Net and Jubilee Kitchen in Pittsburgh.
These kits are crucial
during the winter months when so many of the homeless are in the
shelters.
Other items that are
always needed to complete the kits are washcloths, toothpaste,
toothbrushes, razors, combs and quart size zip lock bags.
Any contribution is
appreciated!
THANK YOU!

KidsHELP Update

50 cards and letters
for our soldiers were received from Stanwood Elementary School in New
Stanton, 100 cards from St, James in Sewickley, 30 cards from Redeemer
Lutheran Church in Oakmont and 75 cards from St. Bernadette's in
Monroeville. All of these greetings were mailed on November 6 from the
National Pioneer Training and Recognition Conference in Reston VA.
Also in October, the
students at Redeemer Lutheran School collected first aid supplies that
were sent to Kandahar, Afghanistan in October.
Two visits were made
to the Animal Rescue League by the Conway kids and their school friends
in August and September answering a call from the Animal Rescue League
who were badly in need of cat and dog food.
Aidan & Julia Conway
also helping with packing 400 breakfast bags for the homeless shelter
If
you would like to help, please give us a call at the Pioneer Office!
kidsHELP
needs more Kids to be
INVOLVED!
We have
had 4 different projects involving children of all ages; we know that
there are more kids out there with great ideas to help others. Can you
help with the Afghan program the First Aid Responder? Maybe you can
start a collection for items at your school or do you have your own idea
that you would like initiate? |

Sustain Our Soldiers / First Responder
Projects
In August, we sent
33 first aid care packages for the Afghan children & people and
another 14 packages in September to Mark Russak's contact, Scott Wilkes
at Kandahar Air Field. The request came originally from Mark Russak and
is being continued by Scott Wilkes.
Scott wrote: "As
most of you know I am a simple flight medic with the USAF and my team
and I provide the medi-vac for the patients to the next level of care, a
flight from southern Afghanistan to the theater hospital in the northern
part of the country. We are very busy flying missions, but my team of 5
personnel and I have processed over 300 boxes in 25 days with another
guaranteed 700 more boxes on the way (that I know of). I was absolutely
floored by all of the generosity that you all have put out. I NEVER
expected the turn out that we have had. I have been deployed numerous
times to a combat zone during my 18 years as an Air Force Reservist, and
I have seen a lot of bad in this world, but you have proven to me that
people still support the troops, no matter what, that to me is AMAZING. |

Dictionaries & Thesauruses 11-3-09
Harmony School, Harmony, Florida

Mary Palfy, Teacher Debbie Mann and
3rd grade student Faith Collins
Faith Collins, helped pass out
dictionaries to her 3rd grade class at Harmony School in Harmony,
Florida.
The children were so excited to receive their own
books.
Narcoossee School, Narcoossee, Florida

Teacher Nancy Bogaenko
and 4th grader Tyler Shelton
Tyler Shelton, helped
pass out thesauruses in his 4th grade classroom.
When I walked into the 4th grade classroom in the
Narcoossee school to pass out the Thesaurus, some of the children
recognized me from the previous year and said "you’re the lady that
gave us our dictionaries last year", they still had them and were
pleased as punch to NOW receive a thesaurus to keep as their own. Most
amazing to me was how overwhelmed the teachers were to receive their
own
book. |

Homeless Shelters
The 12th annual clothing drive for the
homeless of Pittsburgh, benefiting Operation Save A Life, Jubilee
Kitchen and Operation Safety Net at St. Bernadette's Church in
Monroeville was held on Saturday September 19. The parishioners’
generous donations filled five vehicles over a 3 ½ hour period with
new and used clothing and bedding, toiletries and socks. Every year
at Thanksgiving, Fort Pitt provides a small donation to the food bank
at St. Bernadette's. We continue to pack about 200 toiletry kits a
month for the shelters and are always in need of toiletry items. 400
Breakfast bags are being prepared for the Emergency Weather Shelter
when it opens (apple juice, granola bar, crackers, applesauce, and
slim Jim). Nancy Stonis is still knitting hat & scarf sets and so far
this year has completed 76 sets. We have also purchased about 50 pair
of gloves at the dollar store. Marilyn recently delivered 60 pairs of
long johns to Jubilee Kitchen. |

Forbes Report
Pat Aites submitted the following
report: The regular visits of cookies and ice cream at Forbes Nursing
Center will end with our visit on November 24. We enjoyed our visits
with the residents and are looking forward to starting up again in
March of 2010. I'm still in need of two dependable volunteers to
round out the team. |
